Beats walking!... or does it?

Driving vs walking, priced honestly.

Time is money, and walking often takes a lot of time. However, driving carries many costs which are either hidden or deferred to your future self. Enter two U.S. places to estimate which option is cheaper when driving costs, walking time, and health savings are included.

How this estimate works
  • Routes come from OpenRouteService for both driving-car and foot-walking.
  • Your hourly time value is estimated as income midpoint / 2,080 work-hours per year.
  • Driving includes estimated fuel, maintenance, ownership wear/depreciation, and toll/congestion charges.
  • Short city trips apply conservative MPG and idle-time penalties to reflect real-world inefficiency.
  • Walking health savings are conservative long-term estimates and especially approximate.
  • Results are estimates only and are not financial, tax, or medical advice.
